The Idea:
The School of Engineering at Tufts University (Medford, MA) is dedicated
to introducing, retaining, and promoting women and girls in the field
of engineering. Just as other colleges and universities have done,
Tufts has created programs for introducing girls to engineering and
wanted to take its dedication to the next step by making information
about all engineering programs in the nation accessible to all girls
and women. We wanted to create a web site, a clearinghouse of information,
where anyone interested in engineering could go to learn about engineering,
find books about engineering or related matters, fun games and projects,
contests, lesson plans, scholarships, jobs, and especially engineering-related
programs in their area. We also wanted to offer discussion boards
where girls and women would be able to communicate with one another
about engineering and related issues. We realized this was a huge
undertaking and that receiving help from two well-respected organizations
for women in engineering would be essential for creating the site
we had in mind. The Women in Engineering Programs & Advocates Network
(WEpan) and The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) came aboard to help
with the project. A proposal with all of our ideas was submitted to
the GE Fund and we were rewarded with a grant that allowed us to take
the next step and implement our ideas.

Inception:
Gathering information from various web searches and visiting well
know engineering society sites was only the start of the researching
process. All of the engineering colleges in the United States were
visited on the web as well, until we had compiled a database of information
about engineering programs running throughout the country. Concurrent
with the research for the site, the design and navigation of the site
were also being considered and drafted. The result is WIEO.org, the
Women in Engineering Organization, a web site geared toward several
target groups: girls, parents, k-12 teachers, guidance counselors,
college women, college faculty, industry professionals, and project
directors. Each group has their own section with information specifically
for them, but the discussion boards allow them to interact with other
groups as well as their own, to exchange ideas or ask questions.

Mission:
Our mission is to aid the public in discovering more about engineering
by connecting them to the best sites on the web. We aim to establish
a community of communication with our discussion boards and to give
women easy access to information about engineering-related programs
in their area. We aim to be Your Engineering Directory.
